American Idol 9: Hollywood Solo Performances

Hollywood’s final solo performances are the last chance for the remaining contestants, a huge field which was narrowed down to the seventy-one at the start of Tuesday’s episode. The show began with the final deliberations, beginning near the end of the process which will give us 24 Top singers who will compete to be our Idol.

Per formula, the contestants were put into three different rooms. Angela Martin was in Room 3 with Hollywood standout Jessica Furney. Martin’s entertaining performance was only passable vocally, though Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson both seemed to enjoy it.

was in Room 1, while his Hollywood Group member Jermaine Purifoy waited in Room 2. Both their solo performances were incredibly enjoyable and vocally strong, though extremely different from each other.

Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens and Jermaine Sellers also waited in Room 1. Earlier in the day, Sellers made the bold choice to sing “Man in the Mirror,” and some of the notes seemed to escape him. His rather rigid performance might not have won over the judges, but Sellers definitely has a great voice.

American Idol 9: Group Night

It’s group night in Hollywood, which is always a drama-filled festival filled with massive amounts of tears, screaming…and some singing, too. It’s likely the best episode of , and what a pity it comes so early in the season.

Group night is about performance and showmanship, and some singers are more apt to bring that than others. The most talented performers often find each other, as was once the case with Blake Lewis, Chris Sligh, Rudy Cárdenas and Tom Low in Season 6. It’s the task of every group to choose a number, assign parts and work out some choreography. Naturally, some are more successful than others, but those with real chops usually manage to come out of group night unscathed.

American Idol 9: Boston Auditions

Never one to shy away from its own press, American Idol re-capped the events of the past year at the top of the Season 9 premiere. Clips highlighting Paula Abdul’s departure from the show, as well as the announcement that would replace her, were part of the opening montage. After a few brief highlights, it was time for the show to begin.

The Boston auditions were conducted on a very rainy day, but nothing seemed to dim the spirit of the waiting hopefuls who grinned and waved at reality TV cameras. This episode marked Victoria Beckham’s stint as a guest judge, the first to be called in when last summer’s .

The first auditioner to be featured, Janet McNamara, honed her singing skills with the American Idol game. CGI Simon often tells her that she’s “got it,” in fact. She had a thick Boston accent and tons of energy, talking at great length about her Idol gaming skills. Predictably, she was terrible and got a no across the board. Still maintaining high spirits, she claimed the experience was “wicked awesome.” Her audition is viewable in the clip above.

Janet was only the first in a long line of hopefuls, some of which would leave with their dreams still intact. Others would simply leave…many, in tears.

DeGeneres, DioGuardi React to Simon Cowell’s Idol Departure

Simon Cowell

Talk show maven and newest Idol addition Ellen DeGeneres is “very, very sad” that Simon Cowell is , and who can blame her? With Cowell gone, it’s safe to assume that American Idol’s future is now on a downward spiral, and Ellen’s new job is likely to become a very brief blip on the map of her career.

“He announced he’s leaving on my first day - I’m trying not to take it personally,” Ellen cracked jokes, as usual, while talking to her audience. “He’s a huge part of that show, but he wanted a change.”

And so sounded the death knell of America’s most popular reality TV series.

American Idol Continues to Plead Ellen’s Case

Everyone at - even those formerly on the show - has been stepping forward to tell us why Ellen DeGeneres, comedienne and talk show host, is a great choice for the nation’s number one singing-themed reality show. And frankly, I’m not buying it.

“She loves the show, she loves music, and she’s a star,” said Kara DioGuardi, perhaps not realizing that many celebrities could easily fit the three criteria. “You got to be a star to win the show.” That’s not to say that winning the show will make you a star. Anyone know where Taylor Hicks is these days?
